Westwater Canyon – Colorado River

If you want to experience the Grand Canyon rafting experience but cannot afford a 6 or 4 day expedition, the Westwater Canyon trip through the Colorado River could be the most suitable option for you. National Geographic Magazine has termed Westwater Canyon “The World’s Best Short Whitewater Trip”. At Colorado River and Trail Expeditions, we offer you one and two day Westwater Canyon rowing expeditions.

The 17 mile rapid packed section also has several secret swimming holes and is nestled deep in the sandstone cliffs between Grand Junction, Colorado and Moab, Utah. As the river descends into Westwater Canyon, the walls begin to close in and rise to almost 1200 feet in height. Thanks to the narrowness of the rock strewn channel with its strong water currents and the high walls of the canyon, the rapids in the Westwater Canyon are challenging at anytime during the rafting season. Marble Canyon Rapid, the first in the inner gorge is where the action begins. The waves will rock your rafts from side to side as they try to fill them with water. Then as Marble Canyon ends, your rafts will enter Staircase Rapid where you will make your way through a series of deep, trough waves that any water sport enthusiast would love to confront.

Rafting a short distance downstream brings you to the Big Hummer Rapid that delivers a wild splash and a big hole that you need to maneuver through or around. After this you come to the Funnel Falls Rapid – a truly breathtaking point where you can enjoy the crescendo of rafting in the Westwater Canyon. This drop offers the best of adrenalin rushes that every river runner looks for. The pace of the Colorado River becomes even faster from here and you can hold your breath for the Skull Rapid which is formed as the river makes a tight, hard turn towards its left. The rapid has a narrow entrance and the huge, strong waves of Colorado River try to wash everything over the top of Skull Rock and into the monstrous hole at the bottom of the rapid. You will find huge rock walls dead ahead of Skull and finding your way through this course requires some precise maneuvering that leaves every adventure sport lover exhilarated!

This ‘mini Grand Canyon rafting experience’ at Westwater Canyons is an attractive excursion for people with only a few days to devote to river running and Colorado River and Trail Expeditions makes every bit of it most exciting for you.

Along with the Grand Canyon Rafting, Cataract Canyon Rafting, Desolation Canyon Rafting and West Water Canyon Rafting in the state of Colorado and Utah, Colorado River and Trail Expeditions also arranges for exciting rafting expeditions in Canada and Alaska.
